After meeting with each patient, our team offers one of two types of procedures:

• A malabsorptive procedure that reduces the size of the stomach, so that it holds small amounts of food and reroutes the small intestine so that food passes through a limited portion. The result is that fewer calories and nutrients are absorbed.
• A restrictive procedure, which reduces the capacity of the stomach to hold food and slows the rate at which it leaves the stomach, creating a feeling of fullness. If you are more than 80-100 pounds overweight and have tried and failed to lose weight, or if you suffer from obesity-related health problems, bariatric surgery may be an option. The Center for Weight Loss Surgery, located at Saint Clare's Hospital/Dover, answers the community's growing demand for a surgical alternative for serious weight problems. The Center is certified as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®.

Under the direction of a panel of nationally recognized laparoscopic bariatric surgeons, the Center offers a comprehensive care from initial evaluation through surgery and after care. Each surgeon brings extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery and specialized training and expertise in weight loss surgery, and each is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The Center offers both gastric bypass and gastric banding procedures, via the laparoscopic approach, when clinically indicated. This minimally invasive technique allows our patients to recover and resume normal activities more quickly than with conventional surgery.

Patients are cared for by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, surgical technicians, nursing assistants, dietitians and other staff with specialized training in working with weight loss surgery patients.
